Don’t cry for me. Cuco Suárez

With the name roadkill in English, and without a name in Spanish, several toad corpses made their way into Cuco Suárez’s work, forming this thematic series that focuses on the acceleration and general lack of respect that prevails in the present. Starting with the unpleasant sight of dozens of these animals crushed on the road, Suárez begins a reflection related to religious eschatology, investigating questions related to the afterlife; where does the soul go?

Taking as a model toads collected from the road, some collected by the artist himself and others received by mail from friends, the silhouettes are formulated in different materials and media. Used sheets, later converted into rags, are reinvented as canvases for these works, seeking to make everything in the work dead and out of use, reiterating the guiding thread of the proposal. As painting, galipote (asphalt), exploring the repulsion of the public towards the images shown, in an intentional distance, with respect to a greater pleasure and beauty.

Emerging between the oneiric and the dreamlike, ‘Don’t cry for me’, the title of the exhibition and of the series it shows, has a double aspect of meaning. A duality between the simultaneous understanding and bewilderment of the public, coexisting with an irony that contrasts with the message behind the works.
