Counterbalance, harmony, equality, proportion, equanimity, symmetry, reasonableness… are some of the synonyms of the word balance. The meaning and the performativity of the words become catalysts for multiple reflections. Words that in the hands of an artist can provoke tangible or intangible objects.
Maria Gimeno shows two works, a video entitled Equilibrio IV (of stilts and plates) made in 2016. Dressed in a jacket and a tie, she climbs on stilts and tries to hold a pile of plates over her head. An unstable game, a sort of precarious choreography. Will she manage to find a balance between the creative drive and everyday life? Is there a place where art and home converge?
The second piece, wich is is a conclusion for the first one, closes a posibles circle that begun with the stilts. It is titled Dear old, the dishes, 2018, where she incorporated drawings based on other women artists’ self portraits. Drawing faces pays homage to their existence, paying respect to her colleages. The material and its significance. Cermics in the shape of a dish, refering to the house, the domestication, vulnerability and precariousness that most women suffer.
